During his childhood he heard many stories from his relatives which later inspired books like A Long Way From Chicago and A Year Down Yonder which were both set in the town where his father grew up. Although he was only a small child at the time the Great Depression, a time of severe economic recession in the United States which lasted from about , also influenced some of his works.

At 16 he visited the Empire State Building in New York and realized that the capital of Illinois, Chicago, was not nearly as extravagant as he had previously thought.
